How a Sinus Lift Procedure Near Lee's Summit Can Help You Get Dental Implants
You could need a sinus lift procedure near Lee’s Summit if you are in need of dental implants and do not have enough bone density to support them. It is not uncommon for someone to need dental implants but not have enough bone height in the upper jaw for the implants to remain in place securely. A sinus lift makes permanent tooth replacements an option.
Dental implants are an excellent choice
Dental implants are considered the best choice for long-lasting, durable tooth replacements. Implants begin with the placement of a titanium post, also known as a rod, into the jawbone. Unlike dentures and bridges, the implant rod integrates with the jawbone, creating a permanent solution in a process known as osseointegration. The titanium rod is similar to the structure of a tooth root. After the rod is in place, we can affix a replacement tooth that looks and feels like a natural tooth.
Healthy bone is necessary
Dental implants require healthy bone in order for them to attach securely. Unfortunately, people who have missing teeth also often have weak, thin or fragile upper jawbones. This is often due to the fact that once teeth fall out, the bone surrounding the teeth begins to reabsorb into the body, leading to a smaller jaw area and less bone between the ceiling of the mouth and sinus cavity. Periodontal disease can also cause bone loss, and some people are just born with less bone structure.
A sinus lift procedure helps
A sinus lift procedure adds bone to the upper jaw. It is known as a sinus lift because the sinus cavity moves upward in order to make room for the new bone. During the procedure, bone grafts will be on either side of the patient's nose on the inside of the head where the maxillary sinuses are. After placing the bone, it will take four to nine months for it to permanently integrating with the existing bone. Once the bone heals, it will be ready for the implant.
While the process may seem complicated, it is well worth it. According to the Journal of Oral Implantology, after a sinus lift procedure, dental implant survival rates are greater than 90 percent over 3 to 5 years. (http://www.joionline.org/doi/full/10.1563/AAID-JOI-D-10-00122?code=aaid-premdev). If a patient opts out of a sinus lift surgery, they will not be able to have implants and must instead opt for an alternative tooth replacement option.
The two most common tooth replacement options outside of dental implants are bridges and dentures. A dental bridge is essentially a false tooth between two teeth on either side of it. Dentures are a set of false teeth that are removable when necessary. Both of these options are better than no tooth at all, but neither of them is as permanent as a dental implant.
