Scheduling a wisdom teeth removal in Lee's Summit is easier than you may think. If this is something that you believe may be necessary, we recommend calling our office and scheduling an examination. During the examination, we can discuss the process and determine if removing the wisdom teeth is necessary.
We are the experts
We specialize in wisdom teeth removal. While some dentists will also remove wisdom teeth, they typically do so through traditional extractions and not oral surgery. This is only ideal for patients whose wisdom teeth break through the surface prior to the procedure and grow in relatively straight.
Most people are not that lucky. Wisdom teeth typically come in impacted or never break through the gums. They can cause infections and a variety of problems as a result. The only way to remove them in this situation is oral surgery.
Wisdom teeth removal in Lee’s Summit
When we remove wisdom teeth, we put our patients to sleep so that they do not experience any discomfort or remember the procedure. We may try to extract the tooth if it has broken through the surface. If that is possible, excellent. In most cases, we will need to create a flap in the gum tissue.
By pulling out the flap, we can access the tooth below. Next, we will need to cut away any tissue or bone that is on top of the tooth itself. Sometimes, we can then wiggle the tooth and pull it out of the socket. If this is not possible, the tooth will need to be broken up into several smaller pieces that can be removed one by one.
The area will then need to be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized before the flap is placed back down, the area sutured and gauze used to control the bleeding. We can complete the process fairly quickly but need to do so carefully and effectively to ensure that our patients do not suffer any side effects.
Recovering
Recovering from a wisdom teeth removal in Lee's Summit typically takes a couple of weeks. The first few days there will be some swelling and discomfort that can be controlled using ibuprofen and ice packs. During this time we recommend that patients are very careful with their diet and stick with things like soup, Jell-O and yogurt.
We will have a follow-up examination to ensure that healing is taking place as it should and then give patients the green light to return to a more normal diet. Even so, it may take a couple of weeks for the gums to stop being sensitive. Once they do, the recovery process will be complete and patients can go about life without worrying about their wisdom teeth.
