What is Facial Liposuction?

Facial liposuction is a common cosmetic procedure performed as a single process or along with a facelift and other facial rejuvenating procedures. It entails the extraction of excess fatty tissues to reshape and revitalize the face like the jawline. If you are concerned with your double or triple chin or excess fat deposits in the jowls or cheeks, then this treatment can help.

Candidates for facial liposuction

If facial liposuction can be conducted as a single procedure, it is more appropriate for younger people with excellent skin elasticity, strong bone structure and excellent muscle tone. This procedure is not suited for patients with too much skin and little fatty tissue. Alone, liposuction works better with women’s skin than men’s skin.

Facial liposuction procedure

The cosmetic procedure is usually performed as an outpatient treatment, meaning patients can come into the office and get the procedure the same day; it lasts between 30 minutes to one hour. The procedure follows these steps:

The cosmetic surgeon will administer local anesthesia intravenously for the facial liposuction process. Also called deep twilight sleep, the patient will experience no pain while the procedure lasts and will remember nothing about the surgery. A certified anesthesiologist will continue to monitor the patient before, during and after the procedure.

The surgeon will make small incisions to the submental crease, which is a natural crease below the chin. The incision is typically tiny (about one or two centimeters). Sometimes, an extra laceration may be made in the crease located behind the earlobe.

Using the vacuum effect of a round liposuction device called a cannula, the fat will be suctioned through the incision.

To seal the incisions, the surgeon will use dissolvable sutures before applying a light gauze pressure wrap.

Facial liposuction recovery

On the day following the surgery, the patient should feel okay with minor or no pain. The gauze wrap can be taken off the following day. The sutures used will dissolve and do not need extraction. Some patients can even return to their daily routine within a few days after the surgery.

The recovery period is based on the level of pain the patient experiences. Pain may be persistent for one or two weeks. As much as possible, try not to undergo any vigorous activity or exercise for at least two weeks.

Risks of facial liposuction

Like every other type of surgery, there are possible complications linked with the facial liposuction procedure, and that may include infection, bleeding or saggy or asymmetrical skin. It is essential to remember that facial liposuction is usually performed along with facelift surgery. We recommend you visit a practice with a board-certified, expert facial plastic surgeon to prevent a case of poorly done facial liposuction that can cause remarkable facial soft tissue anomalies.

The bottom line

Facial liposuction works well to eliminate unnecessary fat deposits in the face and neck. When going for the treatment, make sure you articulate your desires to the cosmetic surgeon.
