Bone Graft

What is Socket Preservation Grafting?

Wanting to understand more about socket preservation grafting? Socket preservation grafting is a dental procedure that is often performed after someone has one of their teeth extracted. The goal is to prevent dental problems in the area where the tooth is removed by adding grafting materials.

Once a tooth is extracted from the mouth, the bone in that area is no longer being stimulated. This leads to a decline in jawbone health.

The importance of socket preservation grafting

Learning more about the importance of socket preservation grafting is a great idea. When you need to have one of your teeth extracted from your mouth, you not only need to replace your missing tooth, but you also need to think about the jawbone loss that is now occurring.

Once a tooth is extracted, the jawbone is no longer being stimulated by that tooth’s roots. This is because the body deems that the jawbone in that area is no longer necessary, as there is no longer a tooth there to support.

About the procedure

Instead of patients experiencing jawbone loss, they can undergo socket preservation grafting procedure. This procedure is performed immediately after a tooth has been extracted from the mouth and does not take a lot of time to perform. The dental professional performing the procedure will use either a synthetic grafting material, an animal-based grafting material or human bone as the grafting material choice.

The material is strategically placed into the area and then covered up with the gums to heal.

What happens if the procedure is not performed?

Dental patients who do not undergo the socket preservation grafting procedure will begin to experience a decline in their jawbone health in that area of their mouth. This loss of bone can negatively affect the rest of the teeth, which is something to be avoided.

Some patients who have been missing teeth for a long time do not choose a tooth replacement option as quickly as they should. They will experience a good amount of bone loss. This bone loss will make it difficult for those who end up choosing dental implants as their tooth replacement option.

Aftercare

After a patient undergoes the socket preservation grafting process, they need to carefully follow their dental professional's aftercare instructions. This is in order to avoid any complications. They include keeping the area clean, being careful not to disturb the area until it has healed and taking any necessary antibiotics as prescribed.
