What Is the Process of Getting a Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty Lee's Summit, MO

You can get a rhinoplasty to improve your breathing, your nose’s appearance, or even both. The upper portion of the nose is bone, while the lower part is cartilage. This complex structure needs extensive planning. Understanding the process of this surgery can help prepare you well for it. Here are the details you should consider about rhinoplasty.

Before the procedure

Meeting with the oral surgeon is the first step in getting a rhinoplasty. This consultation provides an opportunity for the patient to ask the necessary questions. It also allows the surgeon to find out what the patient hopes to get after the procedure. Measuring and assessing the face will come next.

This step will involve taking before photos for comparison and future reference. The surgeon will also discuss the risks and outcomes of rhinoplasty. Bringing photos of the nose the patient aims to get is a good idea. Patients must also bring a list of supplements and medications they currently take.

During the procedure

The patient can go home as soon as the rhinoplasty is over. This outpatient procedure lasts for about one to three hours, but the surgeon will not keep the patient overnight. But someone will need to drive the patient home and assist the patient until the next day. The patient may choose to be asleep throughout the procedure through general anesthesia. Receiving local anesthesia with intravenous sedation is another option. Rhinoplasty may happen at an outpatient medical facility or a hospital.

The surgeon will cut either inside the nostrils (a closed rhinoplasty) or across the nose’s base (an open rhinoplasty). Raising the skin that covers the nasal cartilage and bones will come next. The surgeon will then rearrange or add to the existing cartilage and bone. This fixes a deviated septum or creates a new shape for the nose. The surgeon will then replace the skin of the nose. Small stitches will keep the skin in its place.

After the procedure

A small splint will fix the nose’s new shape as it heals. It can also reduce the swelling in the area. The patient needs to wear the splint for up to two weeks. The surgeon will also place some packing or cotton gauze inside the nose. Follow the surgeon’s instructions when removing the packing within about a day or two after the rhinoplasty.

It is normal for pain to occur around the eyes and nose. Bruising and swelling often take many weeks to go down. The patient’s face may swell a little. The inflammation may be more pronounced in the morning for about a year after rhinoplasty.

The stages of swelling

Swelling will happen after rhinoplasty for about four to six weeks. The inflammation decreases slowly between one to three months after the surgery. The mild swelling in the nose could still manifest a year after the procedure. The full results of the surgery will be visible after the swelling goes away.

Knowing the process of rhinoplasty can help prepare you for your surgery

If you think your nose needs improvements in how it looks or functions, rhinoplasty is the procedure for you. This surgery can change the shape and size of your nose. It can also enhance your breathing. Working with your oral surgeon can help you recover well.
